Puddingstone is leaving the Island!
We’re thrilled to partner with the beloved Jamestown Arts Center for a beautiful afternoon of music and dance in their creative halls. Join us for a very special musical salon with Grammy-winning Canadian cellist Arlen Hlusko, returning after last year’s sold-out performance at Rough Point.
Program notes Common Threads: Folk, Bach, and Beyond is a solo recital program that asks how music can sustain connection, courage, and hope, foregrounding the shared humanity at the heart of listening together.
Arlen Hlusko curates a folk-inspired journey that moves between beloved traditional melodies and groundbreaking concert works. The program opens with an intimate Improvisation on “Little Birdie” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr) before moving into the luminous Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 6 and Leyla McCalla’s reflective Meditation No. 1. From there, familiar tunes such as “Shenandoah” (Traditional, arr. Arlen Hlusko) and “Scarborough Fair” (Traditional, arr. Frankie Carr) are heard alongside contemporary voices, including George Crumb’s iconic Sonata for Solo Cello and the fiery first movement of Zoltán Kodály’s Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8, a work rooted in Hungarian folk traditions and renowned for expanding the cello’s expressive possibilities.
Throughout the afternoon, dance in selected pieces will be performed by Emily Jerant Hendrickson, allowing movement and music to converse and giving physical shape to the theme of the Musical Salon. Boston-based dancer Emily Jerant-Hendrickson has performed professionally in works by David Parker, Lorraine Chapman, little house dance, Sidra Bell, and others, and is an alumna of The Boston Conservatory with a BFA in dance. She currently serves as an assistant professor of dance at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she teaches in the commercial and contemporary dance programs.
A cash bar by Jamestown Arts Center will be available, along with small bites.
