Puddingstone Festival: III Resonance

Colony house , Washington Square, Newport, RI 02840

Come and celebrate the festival finale with us with “Resonance”: an evening of chamber music at Newport’s historic Colony House, where tradition meets innovation. This program highlights the expressive range of percussion and piano, followed by masterworks of the French and German repertoire. The first half of the concert features works for percussion and piano by acclaimed composers Robert Honstein, Joseph Koykkar, and John Psathas. These pieces explore a vibrant sound world, from Honstein’s inventive textures and rhythmic interplay to Koykkar’s postmodern blend of classical clarity and pop-inspired energy, and Psathas’s electrifying fusion of percussive drive and lyrical piano lines. Musicians Angela Kim and Andre Sonner bring these unique works to life, showcasing the versatility and excitement of the percussion-piano ensemble. During selected pieces, dance will be performed by Katie Moorhead and Colin Stilwell, adding motion and a visual dimension to the music. After intermission, the program turns to the elegance and passion of the Romantic and Impressionist eras. Violinist Andrea Segar and pianist Angela Kim perform Debussy’s Violin Sonata, a work renowned for its quixotic melodrama, shimmering harmonies, and playful spirit. The evening culminates with Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44. This groundbreaking quintet, a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire, brims with lyrical warmth, dramatic contrasts, and exuberant energy. Following the concert, guests are invited to continue the festivities at a post-concert reception across the street at Provence Sur Mer. With a separate ticket, you can enjoy delicious small bites, a cash bar, and the unique opportunity to mingle with fellow audience members, friends, and the evening’s performers in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Join us for a vibrant night of music and celebration in the heart of Newport!
